Booking Production Facilities For The 2012 Olympic Games

With the London 2012 Olympic Games fast approaching, there is going to be a huge demand on production facilities within the UK. With an estimated 20,000 accredited media visiting the London 2012 Olympic venues on a daily basis, local resources will be in high demand. The big boys will have already block booked many local amenities so if you haven’t already done so it’s time to put your game plan in place.

Top of the agenda is sourcing a base from which to operate from. It is worth remembering that the games are not just being held within central London but spread across 34 locations throughout the UK. Considering a venue on the outskirts of the city will give you better access to other Olympic sites, getting in and out of London will be a lot easier than getting across London and most production companies will come with their own parking spaces. Hotel accommodation will also be at a premium and in high demand so moving out will be a lot cheaper and possibly a lot less stressful.

Once you have sorted your editing facilities you need to make sure you have all the equipment and man power in place to do the job. Do you have camera operators lined up; have you ordered enough recording stock; do you have the right equipment to film? And if you want to use a professional presenter they will need to be booked now. Also access permits in and out of the main site will be difficult to come by, so getting alternative suppliers to cut and polish your material outside the main hubbub should be considered.

Also it is worth giving some thought to courier services to transport rushes and equipment to different venues or facilities. It is better to get companies lined up now than be caught out due to high demand during the event.

How To Get The Best Out Of Your “Vox Pops”

The ‘Vox Pop’ meaning the voice of the people and derived from the Latin phrase vox populi is a media tool that is used to take a snapshot of public opinion. Random members of the public are selected to give their views on a particular topic which could be anything from a political or sports event for a news programme or views on products and services for market research.

Some of the basic things to consider when producing a vox pop are

1.       The people being interviewed will not be used to being in front of a camera or recorded and will probably be nervous. It is best to take a quick and fast approach so that they do not have time to dwell.

2.       Questions should be simple but open ended. Keep questions to a minimum but ensure that you ask the same question to each person to get a consistent approach. Interview at least 10 people of mixed race and gender to get a good snapshot.

3.       It is important to get close ups of interviewees to make it more personal but also film them from different angles. This adds variety to the vox pops and can be a useful technique if you want to build up an impression of controversy such as political view points.

4.       Think about where you want to record your vox pop.  Pick a busy location so that you are not racing around the streets to find potential candidates. Find a spot with a varied background so that if you want variety you can pan round with the camera. Also give consideration to noise background. Some background noise can be good but make sure it is not to loud.

Whether using it for broadcast or for market research, the key thing to remember is that it is the peoples view and not the view of an opinion leader that is being captured. This should be represented when editing the material and not dictated by your own views. Vox pops are a great way to see the general public express their own views, bringing information to life through facial expression. Used properly, it is a valuable medium that can be produced in tight timescales, within low budgets and disseminated quickly to a wide audience through the email and internet.

Video Improves Sales

Corporate video production is now one of the most powerful communication tools available today. The statistics speak for themselves. Online video is the fastest growing media platform. Youtube receives more than 100 million unique visitors and streams more than 6 billion videos monthly, according to Nielson (Apr 8 2010). And the search engines love video giving priority listings to websites that host video content. According to a google survey, if you are not in the first page of results, you could lose up to 63% of business.

It is also a great way to bring products to life, especially if the product is not easy to show clients in normal circumstances, such as medical procedures, a demonstration of technical equipment or a customer case study showing your products in a live scenario. In addition it is an excellent forum for getting a consistent message across, leaving your brand intact.

With the advancements in technology and more demand for video production it is no longer an expensive means of communication. Even filming in HD will not break the budget.  There are a variety of SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) memory cards available which can differ quite dramatically in quality, speed and price. But one to watch is the SDHC class 10 which has fast transfer rates and is less prone to errors, all for around £16. And remember investing in HD now can save you money in the future as eventually standard definition will fade away.

Corporate videos can be used in so many different ways from promoting your product, service or company or for internal communications and training. And with so many different mediums to choose from your messages can be far reaching for very little expense.   It is worth remembering that online video can deliver some of the highest return on investment of any advertising media to date.
